The College of Civil Engineering can be traced back to the major in forestry (harvesting and transportation) engineering when Nanjing Forestry University was founded in 1952 as Nanjing Forestry College. Later, the Department of Forest Engineering including the civil engineering specialty was established in 1986 and renamed as the College of Civil Engineering in 1997. The College now has nearly 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and 112 faculty members, among whom are 18 professors, 44 associate professors or teachers with equivalent senior professional level. Some teachers have enjoyed high honors of different levels: 1 teacher is rated as the expert who enjoys the special allowance of the State Council, 1 teacher is rated as the prominent educator of Jiangsu Province, 3 teachers join in the “333 Top Talent Training Project”, 7 teachers in the “Six Talent Peaks” Project, and 9 teachers in the “Qinglan Project”.

The College has 5 undergraduate programs, which are committed to providing the society with innovative and versatile application-oriented talents in engineering and management. In addition to the undergraduate programs, it also has 1 doctor’s degree program (Forest Engineering), 3 master’s degree programs (first-level disciplines, including Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Management Science and Engineering), and 3 programs for Master of Engineering (Civil and Water Conservancy, Transportation Engineering, and Engineering Management). Among them, Forest Engineering is rated as the Key Discipline of State Forestry Administration, the National Key Discipline, and the Discipline in Double First-Class Initiative. Civil Engineering is rated as the Key Discipline of Jiangsu Province, and takes the 52nd place in the list of “the Best Disciplines of China” released by Shanghai Ranking. So far, the College has been granted a total of 3 National Teaching Achievement Awards and 6 Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards.

The College has 6 departments (Forest Engineering, Transportation and Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Engineering Management, Surveying and Mapping Engineering, and Water Supply and Drainage Engineering) and 1 experimental center. The College also manages some branches as a co-owner, including 1 national engineering research center, 1 provincial collaborative innovation center, 1 provincial key laboratory, 1 provincial demonstration center for experimental teaching, and 2 provincial workstations for excellent graduate students.

In recent years, the College has undertaken over 30 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. On an annual basis, it publishes more than 600 academic papers, textbooks or treatises, receives more than 10 million yuan in research funding, and also undertakes nearly 100 scientific research projects or relevant service projects entrusted by local governments and enterprises. Over these years, it has participated in a range of national key construction projects to tackle hard-nut problems in science and technology or complete the construction mission, including Ertan Hydropower Station, multiple expressways (e.g. Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway), multiple bridges across the river and the sea (e.g. maintenance of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, the Second Nanjing Yangtze Bridge, the Third Nanjing Yangtze Bridge, the Fourth Nanjing Yangtze Bridge, Sutong Bridge, and Chongqi Bridge), multiple subways (e.g. Nanjing Metro, Suzhou Metro, Wuxi Metro, Ningbo Metro, and Anhui Intercity Rail), and the recovery and reconstruction after the Wenchuan Earthquake and Yushu Earthquake. Owing to a wealth of practical wisdom, the College has developed some characteristic research fields, such as modern bamboo structure, urban underground engineering, and steel bridge deck pavement. The excellent performances above have earned the College 15 provincial technology awards and commendations from Jiangsu Provincial Government and Nanjing Municipal Government.

In terms of international communication, the College has established a long-term friendly partnership with universities and research institutions in countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Australia, Canada, Japan, France, Italy, Colombia, Chile and so on. The college has one International Research Center for Bio-composite Building Materials and Structures (IRCBBMS) and one Joint International Research Laboratory of Bio-composite Building Materials and Structures (JIRLBBMS).
