I. About
The College of Science of Nanjing Forestry University was founded in 2008, which can be traced back to the Department of Fundamental Courses since the establishment of the university. Our school has three departments, including Department of Applied Mathematics, Department of Applied Physics and Department of Chemistry and Material Science. We offer three undergraduate programs: Information and Computing Science, Polymer Materials & Engineering, and Material Chemistry. In addition, two research institutes and one experiment center can be served as bases for experiment teaching and research.
The School of Science confers master’s degrees on two fields, namely, Material Science & Engineering, and Applied Statistics. Our school has 105 faculty members, including 15 professors, 29 associate professors and three senior experimenters, among which three are doctoral supervisors and 22 are master supervisors. A large number of teachers are granted national-level or provincial-level awards, like “Huo Yingdong Excellent Teaching Achievement Award”, “Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions in Jiangsu Province” and “Mathematics Achievement Award of Jiangsu Province”, or are enlisted in talent plans of the Province, such as "333 Project" and "Qinglan Project" which are outstanding talent plans of the Province. At present, there are more than 700 full-time students at our school.
II.THE DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED MATHEMATICS (DAM)
The Department of Applied Mathematics of the School of Science, Nanjing Forestry University, was formerly known as the Mathematics Teaching and Research Section of the Department of Fundamental Courses. There are 38 teachers, including 5 professors, 15 associate professors, 24 of whom hold a PhD degree. DAM offers core courses to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in information and computing science and conducts a wide range of scientific research.
In recent years, one faculty member won the “HuoYingdong Excellent Teaching Achievement Award”, and one attained the “Mathematics Achievement Award of Jiangsu Province”. Two professors received “Liang Xi Award” from the Ministry of Forestry. Another two faculty members are enlisted in the “333 Project” , an outstanding talent plan of the Province. Our department boasts the finest teachers of this university, many of whom receive recognition for their diligence and excellence and awarded the “Outstanding Teaching Achievements of Jiangsu Province” and “Outstanding Teaching Achievement of Nanjing Forestry University”. Three teachers hold the title of “Excellent Teachers of Jiangsu Province”.
Faculty in DAM also pay great attention to scientific research. So far, scholars of our department have published nearly 200 SCI papers and completed more than 20 research projects including over ten projects sponsored by the National Natural Science Funds of China. These achievements cover most of the secondary disciplines, including basic mathematics, computational mathematics, probability theory and mathematical statistics, applied mathematics, operations research and control. DAM also specializes in the fields of partial differential equations, algebra, biostatistics, mathematical statistics and numerical calculation, which indicate that the mathematics discipline in Nanjing Forestry University enjoy special strength in the field of mathematics.
2.1 DEGREE PROGRAM IN DAM
2.2.1 Undergraduate Program
Information and Computing Science
Overview
This major is a science major focusing on information processing, financial and engineering computing and big data processing, embodying knowledge on information science, computational science, computer science and technology, and other disciplines. Our goal is to foster professionals who master fundamental theories and common algorithms of information science and computing science, proficient in program designing and capable of solving real problems by put their knowledge into practice. Students mainly study the basic principles and methods of information and computing science, and receive systematic instructions on big data processing. Core courses offered to students include numerical analysis, probability statistics, mathematical modeling, those on basic mathematics (mathematical analysis, advanced algebra, analytic geometry),and on basic computer science (database principles and applications, programming, data structure). We also provide a "2+2" joint program in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of Edinboro University, Pennsylvania. After two years’ study within this major at our school, students enrolled in this program will go to Edinboro University to study actuarial science in the next two years. After completing the required credits, they will receive graduation certificates and degrees granted by the two universities.
2.1.2 Graduate Programs
Applied Statistics
Overview
Guided by the frontiers of statistics, this program is set up to meet China’s thirst for applied statistics professionals in the contemporary world and thus improve the system for cultivating talents in this area. Our specialized master degree program focuses on the development of comprehensive qualities of advanced learners of applied statistics. Graduate students of this program will be granted a master’s degree in statistics.
Research Areas
This major focuses on statistical and quantitative methodologies in agriculture, forestry, environmental science and beyond. To meet the societal demand in the construction of China's economy, we cultivate talents specializing in empiriacal statistics and data analysis. Our graduate program is set up by taking account the updated international experience in training professionals in statistics and data analysis and the current domestic professional certification system in this area as well . The start-of-the-art teaching materials and advanced methods enable our students to explore their unseen academic potentials and strengthen their abilities to tackle practical problems.
III.THE DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED PHYSICS
The Department of Applied Physics of the School of Science, Nanjing Forestry University, is formerly known as the Physics Teaching and Research Section of the Department of Fundamental Courses. It can be dated back to the establishment of the university, and has gradually evolved from a department focusing on teaching to one combining teaching and research. There are 15 teachers and four experimenters, 16 of whom hold a PhD degree.
The Department of Applied Physics undertakes the teaching task of college physics (including college physics and applied physics for forestry majors) for all university students who select this common required course. In addition, modern physics and related experiments, wood physics and related experiments are offered to graduate students. Besides actively participating in teaching, faculty members of our department also enthusiastically carry out scientific research and guide students to explore innovative findings.
The Center for Physics Experiment and Teaching is a demonstration center for fundamental teaching and experiment in Jiangsu province, with laboratories covering an area of 1500 square meters and boasting 1500 sets of instruments or equipment.
IV.THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY AND MATERIALS SCIENCE (DCMS)
The Department of Chemistry and Materials Science, Nanjing Forestry University, is the descendant of the Chemistry Teaching and Research Section of the Department of Fundamental Courses, which can be traced back to the establishment of the university. DCMS currently has 46 full-time teachers, including 14 professors, and 14 associate professors, among whom 4 are doctoral supervisors and 19 are master supervisors. 39 of our teachers hold a PhD degree. Furthermore, the faculty in DCMS obtain various honorary titles such as young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions of Jiangsu Province and are enlisted in the “333 Project” and the "Qinglan Project", which are outstanding talent plans of the Province.
DCMS has two undergraduate majors, namely, polymer materials and engineering, and materials chemistry, with more than 400 students. In recent years, teachers of DCMS have hosted and undertaken more than 20 research projects on educational reforms with reference to courses and teaching materials, published over 40 academic papers and relevant teaching materials, and received more than 30 teaching awards. What is more important is the employment rate of our graduates has been as high as 100%.
Actively engaging in scientific research, teachers of DCMS have formed scientific research teams based on their specialized fields, including information functional materials, conductive materials, polymer materials, nanomaterials. We have reaped a particularly good harvest in the most recent years, including three Scientific and Technological Achievement Awards from Jiangsu Province and four Academic Progress Awards from University and Academician Funds. It is worth mentioning that teachers of our department obtained more than ten projects sponsored by the National Natural Science Funds of China, over 40 provincial-or-ministerial-level research projects. A total of more than 250 high-level academic papers have been published by our teachers and students. We also boast more than 70 national patents, including nearly 40 national invention patents.
4.1 DEGREE PROGRAM IN DCMS
4.1.1 Undergraduate Program
(1) Polymer Materials and Engineering
Our department embodies disciplines of chemistry, materials science and physics. The undergraduate program of the department has been recognized as a speciality of the university. Our department offers courses in the areas of analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and physicochemistry, as well as specialized courses in areas like polymer physics, polymer chemistry, polymer manufacturing, coating and adhesion. This four-year program is expected to help students develop a career at companies oriented in polymer or macromolecular sciences, at research institutes or universities, or at the government departments in relevant fields. A vast number of our graduates further their studies and join post-graduate programs home and abroad. This program has been in collaboration with Edinboro University in Northwestern Pennsylvania. Outstanding students can study in the U.S. as exchange students. Credit transfer may be granted to students in recognition of previous studies completed there at an appropriate level as recognised by the University.
(2) Material Chemistry
The undergraduate program in Material Chemistry provides an in-depth introduction to the discipline for students, who will reap the benefit of scientific insights into the field. The program covers areas of chemistry and materials sciences, biomedicine, fine chemicals, policy and law in relevant areas, to name just a few, which will lay a solid foundation for students in their pursuit of future careers. Thanks to their overseas experience, most of the faculty members of our department have unique international perspectives. Our department not only offers traditional courses, such as analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry, but also specialized courses like catalysis, energy, functional materials, polymer, and computational chemistry. Our department encourages undergraduates to participate in scientific research, cooperating with peers, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers to share their experience and skills. This program has been in collaboration with Edinboro University in Northwestern Pennsylvania. Outstanding students can study in the U.S. for one year as exchange students. Credit transfer may be granted to students in recognition of previous studies completed there at an appropriate level as recognised by the University.
4.1.2 Graduate Programs
(1) Material Physics and Chemistry
Overview
Guided by the frontiers of material research, this major employs theoretical methods such as molecular simulation and quantum calculation to analyze and predict the structural properties of materials. Master’s and Doctorate degrees can be offered in accordance with the research fields within our department as well as in conjunction with other departments and research centers of the University.
Research Areas
These encompass the traditional areas of physical and chemical preparation, design and synthesis of materials which are the central link of research into materials, and studies on the physical/chemical behaviors of materials, as well as the emerging fields of functional polymer materials, biomass materials, new organometallic materials, environmental-friendly materials and functional nanomaterials.
(2) Material Processing Engineering
Overview
This major focuses on a wide range of activities, including research and development of theoretical basis of material molding and processing; preparation, processing technology, equipment and control systems of advanced materials; design of natural/synthetic material-based resins and their formulation; theoretical research, application and development of material modification and molding. Master’s and doctorate degrees are offered in accordance with the research fields within the department as well as in conjunction with other departments and research centers of the University.
Research Areas
These encompass the traditional areas of material forming and processing, advanced materials, natural and synthetic material-based resins, material modification and molding, as well as the emerging fields of studies on the molding process from the biomass carbon/plastic composites, development and application of functional packaging materials.
4.2 INSTITUTES IN DCMS
4.2.1 Institute of Materials Physics and Chemistry (IMPC)
The Institute of Materials Physics and Chemistry (IMPC) of Nanjing Forestry University was established in 2010. Since then, IMPC has firmly established itself as an indispensable center for material science and engineering research in China, which is also the laboratory for material chemistry and material processing engineering. IMPC is one of the important scientific research and teaching centers in the field of materials science and engineering in China, hosting a master’s degree program in Materials Physics & Chemistry. Research at IMPC mainly focuses on the urgent needs for high-performance materials and devices in the industrial and scientific areas, including functional materials and functional molecular blocks through precise synthesis and assembly strategy, design and development of new functional materials and devices, characteristics of surface and interface, efficient function conversion, generalizing synthetic strategies and methods toward new functional materials.
At present, IMPC has spearheaded a few interdisciplinary initiatives that combine expertise in the fields of plant-based active materials, ecological environment materials, biomedical materials, clean energy materials, advanced catalytic materials, nanomaterials and devices. Renowned for its rigorous scholarship, IMPC has been widely valued by the society. It has shown a close relationship with academic and industrial circles and has established several long-term cooperative research platforms with them, making important contributions to the development of materials science and technology. The mission of IMPC is to excel in material research, develop advanced technologies in the relevant field and foster exceptional talents to serve the nation, the society and the mankind.
4.2.2 Institute of Polymer Materials (IPM)
The Institute of Polymer Materials (IPM) of Nanjing Forestry University was established in 2010, which is the laboratory for polymer materials & engineering, and materials processing engineering. IPM is a multifunctional center that combines teaching, scientific research and achievement transformation in the field of polymer materials science and engineering, specializing in development and modification of high-performance polymer materials. IPM has a master’s degree program in Materials Processing Engineering. Based on the theoretical research of polymer chemistry and polymer physics along with engineering practice, IPM explores the evolution of morphology and phase structure of polymer materials during the molding process, the principles together with processes and methods for the preparation of new polymeric materials, polymer-based composites, eco-friendly materials and nanocomposites from biomass resources, thus revealing the structure-activity relationship of these materials.
IPM has maintained close ties with academia and industry and been expanding the theoretical research and application in the development of traditional polymer materials and biomass-based materials, in line with the preponderant disciplines of our university, so as to make important contributions to the development of polymer material science and technology.
