Introduction to the College of Science

The predecessor of the College of Science at Nanjing Forestry University can be traced back to the Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics Teaching and Research Group founded in 1952. The Basic Course Department was established in 1961, and the school was established independently in September 2008. There are currently three departments, namely the Department of Applied Mathematics, the Department of Applied Physics, and the Department of Chemistry and Materials Science. There are also three experimental teaching and research institutions, namely the University Physical and Chemical Basic Teaching Experimental Platform, the Institute of Polymer Materials, and the Institute of Materials Physics and Chemistry. The college jointly establishes a doctoral program in Forest Chemical Processing Engineering and a doctoral authorization program in Materials and Chemical Engineering. It has two first level master's degree authorization programs in Mathematics and Chemistry, two professional master's degree authorization programs in Materials and Chemical Engineering and Applied Statistics, one second level master's degree authorization program in Materials Physics and Chemistry, and four undergraduate majors in Information and Computational Science, Polymer Materials and Engineering, Chemistry, and Materials Chemistry. The construction of academic disciplines in the college has achieved remarkable results, with the chemistry discipline ranking in the top 1 ‰ of ESI global institutions.

The college currently has 157 faculty members (145 full-time teachers), including 28 professors, 64 associate professors, 4 senior laboratory technicians, and 7 doctoral supervisors. We have 1 young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions in Jiangsu Province, 1 teaching master in Jiangsu Province, 1 teaching master in the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, 2 specially appointed professors in Jiangsu Province, 1 "Double Innovation Talent" in Jiangsu Province, 2 high-level talent training objects in Jiangsu Province's "Six Talent Peaks", 6 third level training objects in Jiangsu Province's "333 Project", 1 excellent teaching team in Jiangsu Province's "Green and Blue Project" universities, 2 young and middle-aged academic leaders, 5 young backbone teachers, 1 mathematics achievement award in Jiangsu Province, and 2 selected candidates for the "Youth Science and Technology Talent Support Project" of Jiangsu Province Association for Science and Technology.

The college always adheres to the center of talent cultivation work and effectively improves the quality of talent cultivation. Currently, there are over 1000 doctoral, master's, undergraduate, and international students enrolled, including more than 300 doctoral and master's students. There is currently one provincial-level first-class major, one internationally certified engineering education major, and one international cooperative major. The quality of talent cultivation in the college has been continuously improved. In recent years, it has won more than 120 awards, including excellent master's theses in Jiangsu Province, excellent undergraduate graduation designs (theses) in ordinary universities in Jiangsu Province, practical innovation and entrepreneurship training programs for provincial and above university students, and innovative engineering projects for graduate training. Over 600 people have achieved excellent results in important subject competitions at home and abroad, such as the China International University Student Innovation Competition, the China Youth Science and Technology Innovation "List and Leading" Challenge, the National University Student Mathematical Modeling Competition, the American University Student Mathematical Modeling Competition, the National University Student Mathematical Competition, and the National University Student Chemistry Experiment Innovation Design Competition. The college has signed agreements with more than 30 enterprises and institutions to jointly build teaching internships, employment training, and social practice bases. Graduates are highly welcomed by society and employers, and in recent years, the rate of undergraduate students pursuing further education both domestically and internationally has exceeded 45%.

The basic research level of the college continues to improve. During the 14th Five Year Plan period, more than 40 National Natural Science Foundation projects and more than 60 provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects have been approved. In the past five years, the college has published nearly 700 SCI indexed papers, including more than 200 papers in the first district, 4 papers in the top 5, and 14 papers with an impact factor of 20 or above; Authorized 115 national invention patents. Received multiple provincial and ministerial level scientific research awards such as the Liangxi Forestry Science and Technology Award and the Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.

The School of Science is the teaching center for public basic courses and experimental courses in mathematics, science, and chemistry. Every year, it offers more than 150 compulsory and elective courses to undergraduate and graduate students, and teaches over 900 classes. The college took the lead in organizing the National College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition. During the 14th Five Year Plan period, our school won a total of 12 first prizes and 21 second prizes nationwide, ranking first among agricultural and forestry universities in China and among the top universities in Jiangsu. The school has won the Excellent Organization Award in the Jiangsu competition area multiple times. The college has excellent experimental conditions and abundant experimental teaching resources. The university's physics and chemistry basic teaching experimental platform includes the Physics Teaching Experimental Center (Jiangsu Provincial Teaching Experimental Center) and the Chemistry Basic Teaching Experimental Center (School level Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center), with a total area of over 8300 square meters and instrument and equipment assets worth more than 23 million yuan. Every year, 300000 person hours of basic laboratory courses are completed, and the experimental project opening rate is 100%, fully meeting the experimental teaching needs of students.

The college has established graduate exchange and teacher research cooperation platforms with many internationally renowned universities such as the National University of Singapore, the University of Helsinki in Finland, and Lulea University of Technology in Sweden. It has also partnered with the National University of Malaysia to offer undergraduate programs in Polymer Materials and Engineering, signed a 2+2 joint training program agreement for actuarial science with Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in the United States, and signed a student exchange cooperation agreement with Far Eastern University of Science and Technology in Taiwan. Over 100 well-known domestic and foreign experts have been invited to give lectures at the college.
