Introduction to the College of Forestry and Grassland, College of Soil and Water Conservation


 The predecessors of the College of Forestry and Grassland, College of Soil and Water Conservation in Nanjing Forestry University can be traced back to the Forestry Department of Central University and the Forestry Department of Jinling University. They are traditional advantageous colleges with a long history in our university, with the first generation of discipline founders represented by Zheng Wanjun, Ma Dapu, Ye Peizhong, and the second generation of academic masters represented by Wang Mingxiu, Xiong Wenyu, Li Chuandao, and others; The third generation of renowned scholars with extensive influence both domestically and internationally, represented by Cao Fuliang, Shi Jisen, Ye Jianren, etc., is the birthplace of modern forestry in China. With the continuous development of disciplines and the gradual growth of the teaching staff, the original College of Forestry was officially renamed as the College of Forestry and Grassland in May 2023, and the College of Soil and Water Conservation and the College of Forestry and Grassland were co located.

The college has six departments: Forest Genetics and Breeding, Forest Cultivation, Forest Protection, Forest Resource Management, Soil and Water Conservation, and Landscape Plants and Ornamental Horticulture; The college currently has 9 undergraduate majors, including Forestry, Forest Protection, Soil and Water Conservation and Desertification Control, and Biotechnology, which have been selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites. Geographic Information Science and Horticulture have been selected as first-class undergraduate majors in Jiangsu Province. In 2022, the first batch of smart forestry majors in China will be established, and in 2024, ecological restoration (the first batch in China) and economic forestry majors will be added; The college has a doctoral program in forestry as a first level discipline, with 8 second level discipline directions, a master's degree granting program in forestry, and a postdoctoral research station in forestry. The forestry discipline ranks among the top in the discipline evaluation of the Ministry of Education. The college has two national key disciplines, namely forest genetics and breeding, and forest conservation, as well as four key disciplines of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration; We have 7 provincial and ministerial level key laboratories, including the National Key Laboratory of Forest Genetics and Breeding, the Southern Modern Forestry Collaborative Innovation Center of the Ministry of Education, and the International Cooperation Joint Laboratory of Forest Genetics and Germplasm Innovation of the Ministry of Education, as well as 1 national forestry experimental teaching demonstration center. There are currently 1334 undergraduate students and 949 graduate students.

The college has a strong faculty with 162 staff members, including 56 professors, 38 associate professors, and 132 teachers with doctoral degrees. Among the teachers, there is one academician of the CAE Member and nine other national level talents; 18 provincial-level talents, including specially appointed professors from Jiangsu Province; There is one Huang Danian style teacher team from universities across the country, two science and technology innovation teams from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, and three excellent teaching teams from the "Green and Blue Project" in Jiangsu Province. The achievements led by the college teachers have won 2 first prizes and 10 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, as well as 130 other provincial and ministerial awards; Received 1 first prize and 2 second prizes for national teaching achievements; 5 gold awards and 2 silver awards in the College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. In the past five years, there have been 4 key research and development projects led by college teachers, 10 national key research and development projects, 30 sub projects, and 63 National Natural Science Foundation projects. The average annual vertical research funding received is 62.96 million yuan, and the horizontal funding is 16.21 million yuan. In addition, the college actively carries out academic exchanges with foreign countries and has established talent cultivation and technological cooperation relationships with universities or research institutions in more than ten countries including the United States, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, and Sweden.

The college will continue to uphold tradition, reform and innovation, forge ahead, and keep pace with the times.
